Fredericksburg Virginia

INTRODUCTION

Fredericksburg, Virginia is home to the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center. This city is also home to many historical sites such as the Monroe Museum, battlefields, the Confederate Cemetery. Fredericksburg is a city that is quite beautiful in itself. While discovering the city you may want to enjoy a horse and carriage ride or walk down to the Rappahannock River to enjoy the beautiful views.

HISTORY

Fredericksburg was a major site during the Civil War and is known for it's four battlefields: Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Chancellorsville, and Spotsylvania. The area was central to the fight because of it's location halfway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.

ATTRACTIONS

  • Carl's Ice Cream
Opened in 1947, Carl's Ice Cream is a local favorite and a popular destination for visitors. Located on 2200 Princess Anne Street, it is easy to find from Route 1 Jefferson Davis Highway. Their frozen custard is legendary and on a busy night the line can wrap around the front of the building. Service is efficient though and you will soon be enjoying one of Fredericksburg's finest treats!
  • Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields
  • Chatham Manor
This Georgian mansion with a rich history sits on a hill across the Rappahanock River overlooking the City of Fredericksburg. Well worth the visit for the views and the gardens alone, Chatham also offers historical tours from 9-4:30 each weekday. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Walt Whitman visited the house over the course of history. During the Civil War it was headquarters for Union soldiers.

Located at 200 Lafayette Boulevard, this upscale restaurant serves a variety of entrees from $15-25. The service and the food are both excellent, and the setting unique since it is situated in Fredericksburg's old train station.
