Fisherman S Wharf San Francisco

Fisherman's Wharf is one of the large tourist attractions San Francisco has to offer. The Wharf has lots to offer its visitors from dining, lodging, shopping, entertainment and history.

All along Jefferson Street, one can view San Francisco's fishing fleet and view fishermen at work while strolling through "Fish Alley." There are lots of stops all along the "Alley" that provide for the freshest fish served up in any fashion imaginable. The Wharf is also the location to catch Bay cruises and charters.

There are several different Maritime museums located throughout this district that feature the history of the fishing fleets to the different beacons or Fresnel lenses used in the local lighthouses. Tour the fishermen's barracks and the Monterey-style fishing boats, or in their gift shops, pick up a CD of old sea chanteys from the area or books on the harbor during the Gold Rush, amongst a myriad of other things.

Next door to the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum, one can visit the USS Pampanito, a World War II submarine. The Wax Museum is a must-see as well. The Wharf neighborhood is never short of entertainment. Also located in this district: the famous sea lions of Pier 39, Pier 39 itself, The Aquarium of the Bay, Anchorage Square, The Cannery, and Ghirardelli Square.

Cannery
The CANNERY

THE CANNERY is an old peach cannery that has been converted into a major shopping complex, with a few trendy outdoor cafes scattered throughout and a world-class jazz club. It is located in Del Monte Square at the end of Fisherman's Wharf overlooking the Bay. The courtyard in the center of the complex completes the European charm with 130-year old olive trees. THE CANNERY's Courtyard Stage features live performances every night.

Ghirardelli Square has also been converted into an open-air shopping complex. Inside, however, one can see the company's original chocolate-making machines, and then step in line for a table in their restaurant where one can order their famous desserts...definitely a treat not worth passing up!
