History
The city was named after Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, who received five million acres from King Charles. Farmers from the tidewater region of Virginia settled the area in the 1700s and in 1861, John Quincy Marr, the first confederate officer to die, was killed in Fairfax.

In 1874, the town was renamed the Town of Fairfax, and then became an independent city in 1961.
