Munich’s Englischer Garten is a large public park in the center of Munich. It is one of the world’s second largest parks, bigger than Central Park, but smaller than London’s Richmond Park.
The park was created in 1789 and continued to expand and improve with each of Munich’s rulers. It is home to many attractions including the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower), which is a wooden tower modeled after a pagoda in the gardens of a Chinese Emperor.
It also holds a Greek style temple called the Monopteros, which sits on a hill and provides scenic views of the city. The Monopteros was built in 1832 using materials left over from recent work on the Royal Residence in Munich.
Along with different monuments, streams and walking paths snake their way throughout the park. Running and walking through the park is common for tourists and Munich dwellers alike.
