Dry Tortugas is a remote set of seven islands west of Key West. The park includes tropical reefs, shoals, and colonial historical sites. The area was famous for its pirates but now is more known for its marine and bird life. Though this is a remote park that can be difficult to access, those who visit will never forget the natural beauty of Dry Tortugas.
The climate is subtropical and so is very hot and sees regular precipitation. Due to its location in the Gulf of Mexico, Dry Torguas experiences severe weather events on a regular basis. Be sure to check the hurricane forecast before traveling in the summer months.
A must see in Dry Tortugas is Fort Jefferson, a six-sided stone fort from the civil war era. The fort is surround by white sandy beaches and turquoise water, which makes it one of the most stunning forts to visit and also one of the least accessible.
