Doylestown Pennsylvania

Doylestown, Pennsylvania is a pretty interesting place to spend the day. It is located in Bucks County and is situated adjacent to some of the most picturesque countryside you’ll ever see, and yet darn close to Philadelphia, about an hour away to the south. The downtown area is the Boro of Doylestown while the surrounding residential and business districts are in Doylestown Township.

The downtown area isn’t real big, which is part of the charm. It has a nice smalltown feel to it. There are lots of restaurants and cafés to choose from, as well as shopping in unique independent shops. For a real Sunday morning (or any morning for that matter) casual home-cooked meal without the fuss, stop by the Cross Keys Diner, on U.S. Route 313 or Swamp Road., located just east of Main Street. The Cross Keys is one of those places the locals know about and frequent, and on Sunday morning get there by 12 noon. There is also Siam Cuisine at the Black Walnut, located on 80 West State Street, for really authentic Thai food in a more formal atmosphere.

Another cultural attraction includes the James A. Michener Art Museum, which has over 12,000 sq. feet of viewing space and changes it's displays frequently. There is also the Mercer Museum, which is a castle built in 1916. It houses displays of early implements, folk art, and furnishings of early America.

Be sure to check out the Fonthill Museum and the Moravian Tile and Pottery Works too. Just outside of Doylestown (or D-town as the locals call it) is a really neat eight-story castle of a playground called Kid’s Castle, located in a playground known as Central Park. This impressive structure was the result of a volunteer community effort to build a wonderland of swings, slides, a rocket ship, climbing and hiding places, and a great place for kids to spend a summer afternoon.

Back in town if you like art movie houses, check out the County Theater for films you won’t find in the big multiplexes. Afterwards, take a stroll and admire the many houses and buildings that have been restored to their original architectural beauty.

Students from nearby Delaware Valley College can often be seen in town, which tends to add to it’s funky ambience.
