Dover, Delaware Travel Guide

INTRODUCTION

Located on the Saint Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain, this capital city was named by William Penn for Dover in England.

HISTORY

This city was founded as a court town in 1683 by William Penn, and it was officially laid out in 1717. The capital was moved to Dover in 1777. Dover was the site of a large Quaker community and a stop on the Underground Railroad. It is also the site of a major military air base constructed after World War II.
