Named after the strait between the Door Peninsula and Washington Island, Door County is home to five of Wisconsin's state parks: Newport, Peninsula, Potawatomi, Rock Island, and Whitefish Dunes. These parks include recreational activities such as hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, and snowmobiling.
Perhaps the best time to visit Door County is from mid-July to early August which means one thing: cherries. The Montmorency tart cherry is the most popular, and family-owned cherry orchards are a thriving business. During cherry season the highways of Door County are dotted with handmade signs advertising pick-your-own cherries. If you are in a hurry you can stop by one of the many roadside stands and buy your cherries pre-picked. Roadside stands are also the best places to pick up sweet cherries, as the season is a little earlier and not as many farms offer pick-your-own.
Eating in Door County can be quite an adventure. Because of the proximity to Lake Michigan, fresh fish are a must, whether it comes from a fancy seafood restaurant or a traditional Door County Fish Boil.
