Des Moines IowaThe Greater Des Moines area is a diverse, multi-faceted metropolitan area. From exciting nightlife such as the theatre, ballet, symphony, and opera to comedy clubs, live music and historical places, you can find it all in Des Moines. HISTORY Fort Des Moines was built here in 1843 by James Allen. Settlers came soon after and the city was incorporated in 1851 and became the capital. In recent years the town has been built up to include many buildings and skyscrapers. A skywalk system took shape in the 1980s to travel between them.
