The Danakil Depression, part of the great rift valley, is a geological depression in the horn of Africa and known as one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on earth.
The Depression includes the Danakil Desert and the lowest point in Africa, Lake Asal.
The region is well known as one of the cradles of hominids, containing the Middle Awash, site of many fossil hominid discoveries; Gona, site of the world's oldest stone tools; and Hadar, site of Lucy, the 3.3-million-year-old fossilized remains of a human-like child. The remains of Lucy can now be viewed at the Ethiopian Museum in Addis Ababa.
Visiting the Danakil depression can be difficult but is a once in a life time opportunity.
