Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, is a bustling, energetic city with an endless array of things to do, see, smell, taste, hear and experience. The best way to discover Dakar is by foot. Take a walk along the clifftops near the ocean for fabulous views, or descend to the sandy shore to mingle with the locals. Among the busy city streets you'll find markets and parks to explore. There are two main markets in Dakar: the Marché Kermel, more frequented by tourists; and the Marché Sandage, where visitors will be dazzled by the vast displays of colorful clothing and cloth. After the visual feast of the markets, head to the park -- Hann Park is one of the best in the city, and it is also home to the Senegal Zoo.
In a country known for its vibrant culture, there is no better place to immerse oneself in Senegalese art and music than Dakar. Art lovers will find an abundance of galleries, artists' studios, museums, and festivals. For an informative introduction, head to the IFAN Museum of West African Culture. One of the foremost centers for the study of African culture, the Institute contains the Théodore Monod African Art Museum, which exhibits important collections from all over Francophone Africa.
While the miles of endless golden beaches are the main attraction to the resorts north and south of Dakar, the city is also one of the best places in the region to enjoy live music. Both rapper MC Solaar and R&B artist Akon got their start in Senegal, and the country's celebrity credentials are reflected in the vibrancy of Dakar's music scene. There are several nightclubs and music venues specializing in mbalax, a modern form of Wolof percussion music made popular by international star Youssou N'Dour. In addition, many bars in Dakar play other styles of African and international music. Music is one of the richest and most popular parts of Senegalese culture, and no trip to Senegal would be complete without the experience of a live performance.
Other sites worth visiting in Dakar include the President's Palace, the Dakar Grand Mosque and the Dakar Cathedral. Between scenery and culture, markets and sightseeing, visitors to Dakar will have plenty to enjoy.
