INTRODUCTION
The country is long and skinny, mostly hugging the coastline. As you head south, you pass by farmland and dry, rock-covered grasslands.
Dubrovnik, the largest city, is a gem glistening in the sun. Be sure to climb the stairs and walk the old city wall. There are great views on the hillside town looking down on the entire walled city and the harbor. The old town has narrow pedestrian streets with great seafood restaurants and small shops.
In Opatija, there's a seaside promenade that's mostly flat and offers great scenery that winds along the coastline. It ends at the small harbor of a fishing village that has some great waterside restaurants and trellised balconies overhanging narrow streets. The prices have been going up steadily each year as tourism returns to the country, so keep that in mind when planning any vacations.
The beach is part of the culture in Croatia, with people from all over Europe and the world flocking to the seaside each year to enjoy the calm of the water and soak up some rays.
