Cork is the second largest city in Ireland and the largest city in the province of Munster.
Cork has a reputation for rebelliousness dating back as far as the 15th century and is known as "The Rebel County" as a result. Corkonians consider themselves to live in the "Real capital" or "The people's republic of Cork".
Founded by St. Finbarr over 1,000 years ago, originally as a trading merchant hub, Cork has developed into a vibrant, cosmopolitan 21st century city.
Cork harbour is the worlds second largest natural harbour, after Sydney Harbour, Australia. The city also plays host to the annual Guinness Jazz Festival, which attracts top musicians from all over the world.
Main attractions in Cork include St. Finbarrs Cathedral, Blarney Castle, Cork City Gaol, Fota Wildlife Park, The Shandon Bells, the Old English Market, a Jameson Factory, and the Cork Butter Museum.
In the summer, Cork holds the Cork Midsummer Festival, which usually takes place in mid-June. The city plays host to a multitude actors and artists taking part in plays, comedy shows and various forms of artwork.
Cork county is also known for the magnificent beaches and fishng villages that dot the coastline.
