INTRODUCTION
Copenhagen is located on the Danish island of Zealand and is the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Denmark. The city is the seat of the countries parliament, government, and monarchy, as well as the country's cultural center. The city is separated from the neighboring country of Sweden by a strait of water, but the two countries are connected by a toll bridge for motorists and rail, allowing easy access. Copenhagen is a historic port known for tolerance, quaint architecture, and a 24/7 party scene.
HISTORY
Copenhagen has not always been the capital of Denmark, but due to its location on the approach to the Baltic Sea, the area of Copenhagen has always been important in the country's trade. In 1160 Copenhagen was given to Roman Catholic Bishop Absalon, starting the city's surge into prominence by increasing the city's churches and herring trade. In 1416 the crown regained control of Copenhagen and by 1596 the city became the Nordic region's center for economy, religion, military, and culture. During this time the city was fortified and built up with many of its current historic landmarks. During the 1700 and 1800s the city survived many sieges by the British and its other neighbors and during the age of revolutions, Denmark, in 1849, became a constitutional monarchy. During World War II Copenhagen was occupied by the Nazis.
