Connemara is a region in the western part of County Galway renowned for its spectacular scenery. Highlights of the area include the Twelve Bens, ancient bald peaks that loom over the landscape; the quaint village of Cong, where much of the 1952 film The Quiet Man was filmed; Kylemore Abbey, an architectural gem of breathtaking beauty nestled among the rugged hills; and many other sites of spectacularly wild beauty. Some of the best views of the coastline can be found along the Sky Road, just outside the town of Clifden. It is here that you will find the marvelous ruins of Clifden Castle.

Driving in Connemara is probably the best way to efficiently experience all of the natural beauty. For those who do not want to rent cars, organized bus tours are widely available. Those who get carsick easily should be forewarned that the roads are curvy, and the terrain is mountainous. If you have a little more time to spend in the area, there are numerous hiking and backpacking trails (a large part of the region is a national park).
