Wow, Colonial Williamsburg has changed! The visitor center has undergone a huge upgrade and the entry fees have too, but thats the way it goes everywhere. A bus will wisk you from the visitor center to Colonial Williamsburg and when you get there, I hope you have your walking shoes on. Be sure to check the schedule you got so you can enjoy as many of the presentations as you can stand because this is what makes the experience.
In fact, we should have sat with our map and planned a route before we even got on the bus. I found most of the enactors to be very knowlegeable about the history of their locations. Towards the end of the long walk, you will find yourself at a very high end shopping area. Looking however is FREE. There is a nice wine and cheese shop there, we picked up some cheese and a glass of wine, and went and sat on one of the many benches in the area and just watched the shoppers pass by.
The bus back to the visitor center also stops in this area, so you can save you tired feet. Its a very nice way to spend a day, you could probably spend two. The room prices can be high in season, so shop around. We found ourselves a small hotel in between a Hooters and a Cracker Barrell. Worked well for us, and we were so tired by the end of the day, all we were concerned with was a clean soft bed and some piece and quiet.
If you plan on visiting the outlet mall, which is practically another day in itself. I suggest you find out the hours and get their early. Parking is very scarce, and there is no where else close that you can park and walk. You could find yourself (and you won't be alone)circling the parking lot for a long long time looking for a spot.
