The Cliffs of Moher (Aillte an Mothair, or Ailltreacha Mothair), which rise to a height of 214m and stretch over 8km wide are one of Ireland's top tourist destinations.
The view from the cliffs is spectacular, ranging from the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, The Twelve Pins, the Maum Turk Mountains in Connemara, and Loop Head to the South. The area is one of outstanding beauty, is abundant in wildlife, and is home to one of Ireland's major colonies of cliff nesting seabirds.

Cliffs of Moher
Perhaps the Cliffs' most famous appearance is as The Cliffs of Insanity in the movie The Princess Bride. Be warned, this alternate title is not that far off, as weather near the cliffs is treacherous and tourists have been known to fall (or be blown) to their doom. Fortunately, there are now protective barriers to prevent anyone from getting too close to the cliff edge. Something else that is new at the Cliffs is the Visitors' Center. In an effort not to spoil the natural beauty of the area, the Visitors' Center is housed almost completely underground. It is home to a cafe and gift store, as well as an interpretive exhibit, Atlantic Edge, which is dedicated to exploring the natural history of the Cliffs.
Seeing the Cliffs themselves is free, but parking in the designated lot will set you back about 8 euros. The Atlantic Edge exhibition costs an additional 4.95 euros for adults. If you don't have a car, you can take a bus tour from Galway, which will bring you to the Cliffs as well as the rest of the Burren. A unique view of the cliffs is offered by cruises, which depart daily from the nearby town of Doolin.
