INTRODUCTION
Choco is the only Colombian department that has coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The population is mainly Afro-Colombian. Quibdo is Choco's capital and is the most populated with 100,000.
HISTORY
Choco was founded in 1944. During the past decade Choco has been a relatively peaceful region, although in the 90's guerrila organizations and local paramilitary groups began using the area as a battle field between themselves and the government. One of the greatest tragedies in Colombia's history was the Bojaya massacre in 2002, when approximately 119 civilians were killed by Farc guerrillas.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Choco has a unique ecosystem and unexploited resources. Unfortunately despite these facts, this department also has the worst human living conditions of any other department in Colombia. Because of its distance from Bogota, low population, and difficult topography, this department has been largely ignored by the Colombian government.
LODGING
Visiting Choco can be an amazing experience. Staying at a resort like Capurgana, Jurado, Nuqui, or Bahia Solano, would be the best way to go.
