Chester Beatty Library, Dublin

While the Trinity Library may have the most famous manuscripts in Dublin, the Chester Beatty Library houses the greatest variety. This little gem of a museum/library features various books, manuscripts, and works of art from across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. The exhibits are from the personal collection of Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968) and are organized into three general groupings: East Asian, Islamic, and Western. Notable pieces include the Biblical Papyri, which contain the earliest known copies of the four gospels and Acts of the Apostles. The library also houses the largest collection of jade books from the Chinese Imperial Court outside of China.

The Chester Beatty Library is open during the summer Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The serene and studious exhibit area provides a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of the city outside. It can also provide some relief for your wallet: admission is free.
