INTRODUCTION

West Virginia's spectacular mountains, swirling rivers, and scenic countryside offers a welcome change of pace from the rush of everyday life. You'll find Charleston to be full of fun and nightlife. From wild to mild, from five-star resorts to rustic retreats, Charleston truly has something for everyone.

HISTORY

The first permanent settlement was built in 1788 by Colonel George Clendenin and his company the Virginia Rangers. It was officially established by the Virginia Counsel in 1794.

In the 1800's, a salt mine was discovered in this area which lead to a period of economic growth and prosperity. The prosperity continued when in 1815 the first natural gas well was struck and coal was discovered in 1817. During the civil was, this was the site of the Battle of Charlston. It was at first won by the Confederacy, but the town was later occupied by the Union until the end of the war. In 1877, Charlston was named capital of the newly formed state.

Charlston continued economic growth into World War II with the first and largest synthetic rubber plant in the U.S.
