Charleston Market

Charleston Market, called the Straw Market by locals, is where colored slaves and freedmen originally gathered to sell their goods. Now, the market is lined with street vendors selling Charleston candy, famous South Carolina straw baskets, inexpensive purses and many other commodities. Walking through the market is a great way to spend the afternoon and get used to southern living.

Make sure to keep an eye out too! Look for white lines on the bricks about six or seven feet off the ground. That is the water line that formed from the extreme flooding caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the entire city was under water!
