Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico Travel Guide

Carlsbad features one of the greatest underground cave systems in the world. The park covers over 100 cave systems including the eight acre "Big Room," where you can take a self guided tour. There are also hiking and camping opportunities on the surface, as well as viewing the many species of bats that call the park home.

The weather here is variable and can change quickly so be prepared. Winters are cold and often snowy, while the spring is very windy. Summer is the most comfortable, but powerful thunderstorms can crop up without warning.

For a real adventure at Carlsbad take the guided tour of Spider Cave. This narrow, claustrophobic route is not for the faint of heart but is an exhilarating tour through some amazing rock formations and underground springs. Reservations should be made in advance and costs $20 for adults.
