While in Victoria, British Columbia, visit The Butchart Gardens, a horicultural masterpeice created from a limestone quarry, an absolute must-see for gardeners.
In 1888, near his birthplace, Owen Sound, Ontario, the former dry goods merchant, Robert Pim Butchart, began manufacturing Portland cement. His wife, Jennie, decided to do something with the pit that was left from the digging. She started a beautiful "Sunken Garden," and the neighbors started visiting to see her beautiful garden. By the 1920's, more than fifty thousand people a year visited.
