Burano is most famous for its elegant lacework, which has been coveted in Italy for centuries. Women began making lace with needles in the 16th century and eventually a school for lace-making was opened in 1872, which still thrives today. Burano is also famous for its extremely colorful homes, which the tiny island prides itself on.
