INTRODUCTION
The second largest city in North Dakota, Bismarck sits on the Missouri Plateau, across the Missouri River from Mandan, North Dakota. These two cities make up the core urban area of the "Bismarck, ND Metropolitan Statistical Area" or "Bismarck-Mandan."
HISTORY
This city was built in 1872 and at the time was called Edwinton. The name was changed in 1873 to honor the German chancellor Otto Von Bismarck in order to attract German immigrants to settle in the city. People were really attracted to the city when gold was discovered in the nearby Black Hills in 1874. Bismarck became the acting capital in 1883 and it was made official in 1889, when North Dakota gained statehood.
