Biscayne is a very special park since it protects a very fragile ecosystem. The park covers some coastal wetlands and islands in the Florida Keys but primarily covers the shallow Biscayne Bay and a stretch of long living coral reef. The shallow waters and reef are home to hundreds of types of colorful tropical fish. Camping on the islands and the mainland is available but the true wonder of Biscayne lies under the water.
The climate is tropical and hot in the summer. The winters are more mild but can be very windy. Rain is a daily occurrence so be prepared, bring rain gear no matter the season.
A great way to experience the marine wildlife and sights is on a canoe or kayak. Much of the bay and surrounding Mangrove forests are too shallow for motorized water-craft but are perfectly accessible by canoe. If you are up to it, paddle the seven miles across the bay to Elliot Key or Boca Chita Key where you can camp for the night. Canoe tours are offered normally in the winter months but may be available at other times.
