Big Bend National Park, Texas Travel Guide

There are three unique areas covered by Big Bend National Park: high mountain environments, vast lonely desserts, and broad rivers. This hidden park is one of the few truly wild areas left in America and as such presents adventure and danger. In the dessert hikers routinely need to be rescued after they misjudge the harsh climate.

With the three different environments come three very different climates. The mountains are usually cool in the summers, while the dessert is very hot and turns mild in the winters. The low river valleys see the most precipitation, but still are relatively dry.

For the more intrepid traveler, try a back country trip down the Rio Grande river, along the U.S.-Mexico border. The river meanders through slow wide valleys and pounds through rapids as difficult as grade IV. You can use your own equipment or take one of the excellent guided trips.
