Berne Switzerland

INTRODUCTION

Berne is the capital of Switzerland and the fourth most populated Swiss city after Zurich, Geneva, and Basel. It is a unique and beautiful city, surrounded by the river Aare flows, and should not be left out when visiting Switzerland.

Berne has managed to maintain its historic features and the old town of Berne has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site. Berne was founded in 1191 and was re-built in 1405 following a huge fire. The city still looks almost identical to when it was first founded, which is something Berne takes a lot of pride in. The numerous fountains, sandstone facades, narrow streets, and historic towers send you right back into medieval times. Although Berne, like all other cities in Switzerland, has a great public transportation system, it is best to explore the city center on foot.

Berne is the seat of Switzerland's government. The Houses of Parliament (Bundeshaus) rise above the city just around the corner from the railway station. The doors to the Houses of Parliament are open to visitors most of the time and, if you are lucky, you might even bump into a member of parliament in the streets of the city.

In summer the river Aare provides an opportunity for the ultimate bathing experience; experienced swimmers allow themselves to drift along in the clean Aare while enjoying a view of the Houses of Parliament.

Berne is famous for its entertaining nightlife, with a lot of bars and clubs to chill and dance. Bierhübeli, Wanddorfclub, and Marians Jazzroom are some of the most popular ones.

Christmas time is a particularly beautiful time to visit Berne. In December there are two big Christmas markets in the historic city where you can buy all kinds of handicrafts and enjoy delicious pastries. Next to the big Christmas tree there is also an ice rink with Christmas music and beautiful lightings.

ATTRACTIONS

Zytgloggeturm/Kramgasse: One of Berne's best attractions is the Zytgloggeturm, a clock tower that was built in 1191. For a little while this tower was used as a women's prison, but after the big fire of 1405, which almost burned down the entire city, it was only used as a clock tower. It is a masterpiece of medieval clock art. Four minutes before the full hour a chime sounds until the bells mark the full hour and little characters from the medieval times are set into movement.

Berner Münster: The platform of the 330 feet high cathedral tower offers one of the best views of the old town of Berne and the river Aare. The cathedral, from late medieval times, does not only serve as a Protestant church, but is also a cultural part of Berne society. It hosts concerts and other cultural events. Hearing the nine bells of the cathedral are a beautiful extra when strolling along the streets.

Einsteinhaus: The Einstein House is home to a museum of Albert Einstein and is located on the Kramgasse. Albert Einstein lived in that house from 1902-1909, when he worked and lived in Switzerland. In memory of Einstein's stay in Berne, his apartment on the second floor is still arranged and decorated the way it was during his time, and is open to the public.

Altes Tramdepot: Traditional brewery with classic Swiss specialties, this restaurant offers a beautiful view over the historic center of the city.
