A nice little town to shop in and catch a ferry to one of the Apostle Islands (Islands in Lake Superior), Bayfield is a popular tourist destination that still manages to retain its small, fishing-town charm. Take a leisurely stroll along the brightly-colored harbor and past the historic homes and businesses. Bayfield is a great place to pick up souvenirs or gifts, as the streets are lined with small shops, many selling local crafts.
Bayfield is known as the "Gateway to the Apostle Islands," and ferries leave to the Islands daily. Other nearby attractions include the Big Top Chautauqua, just three miles out of town. From June through September, a variety of renowned musicians come from near and far to play at the "Big Top." The performances are also featured on the weekly public radio program "Tent Show Radio." Tickets are available online, over the phone, or at the Box Office.
Early October, finds Bayfield in the midst of the annual fall Apple Festival. Every year, close to 50,000 visitors gather to celebrate the apple harvest with food, live music, a parade, crafts, an apple-peeling contest, and more!
