Balboa Park is the nation’s largest urban cultural park – larger than New York City’s Central Park – and is located in the heart of downtown San Diego. Within the park’s boundaries are 15 museums, the San Diego Zoo, performing arts venues, gardens, and plenty of space to picnic or play sports. A miniature railroad transports children around the park, and the Spanish Village Art Center displays local art. Museums include the San Diego Air & Space Museum; the Museum of Man, dedicated to anthropology and evolution; the San Diego Model Railroad Museum; the Museum of Photographic Arts; and the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum, the country’s largest multi-sport museum. Kids can interact with science in hands-on exhibits and see planetarium shows in IMAX at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.
The Old Globe theater consists of three theaters: the historic Old Globe, a smaller, cozy theater, and an outdoor stage. Other performing arts activities include the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, which houses one of the largest outdoor organs in the world, dance, and symphony orchestras.
The park’s twenty gardens include desert succulents, native California foliage, Australian plants, Japanese bonsai, a butterfly garden, medicinal plants, and more. Recreational activities include hiking, biking, lawn bowling, and a diverse array of sports, from swimming to badminton.
