INTRODUCTION
Baku is the capital and largest city in the country of Azerbaijan. The city is located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Southwest Asia. It is also bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.
HISTORY
According to archeological findings this city dates back to the B.C. era. Because of its location the city throughout its history was an important trading route between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The region has been controlled by the Ottomans, the Mongols, and pre and post USSR Russia. The cities importance lays in its early 8th century discovery of oil and petroleum, and the city built the first oil well and oil refinery in the world.
