Arch Of Constantine

The imperial Arch of Constantine is located right next to the Colosseum. It is one of three remaining imperial arches in Rome; the other two are the Arch of Titus and the Arch of Septimus Severus.

The Arch of Constantine has three archways. The center archway measures at 11.5 m x 6.5 m, while the side archways measure at 7.4 m x 3.4 m. The Arch itself is 21 m high, 25.7 m wide an 7.4 m deep.

The Arch was built to commemorate the victory of Constantine's army at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD where Constantine's army defeated the numerically larger army of Maxentinus.

The Arch was primarily decorated using "spolia," or material from other monuments. The re-use of these decorations gives complex and dual meanings to the Arch's sculptors; the meaning from its original structures remain and simultaneously lend new meaning to Constantine and the Battle of Milvian Bridge.
