INTRODUCTION
Aransas Pass is both a navigable salt water channel connecting the Gulf of Mexico with Aransas Bay, and a small town on the western end of the pass.
Aransas pass separates Mustang Island to the south from San José Island to the north, and is protected by jetties extending out into the Gulf from both islands.
The town of Port Aransas? is located at the far northern end of Mustang Island. At the western end of the pass, on the mainland side of Aransas Bay is Aransas Pass. A free ferry serves the two towns.
HISTORY
Historical evidence suggests the Karankawa Indians were the first people to discover Aransas Pass. By 1830 however, there were few Karankawas remaining and by 1850, white settlers began moving into the area. The town of Aransas Pass was not born until 1909 however.
It developed as a fishing village and the first shipment of shrimp to San Antonio was in 1912. At this time it was the homeport for about 300 large shrimp trawlers, which annually net millions of pounds of shrimp.
