Aran Islands, Ireland

Cliffs of Inishmore
Cliffs of Inishmore

The Aran Islands is the name given to a group of 3 islands located off the west coast of Ireland, on the very edge of Europe. The islands are rich in the language and culture of Ireland and have a long tradition of gentle hospitality. Irish is the spoken language on all 3 islands and most islanders have developed a system of total self sufficiency to adapt to the harsh climate conditions.

The largest and most visited island is Inishmore. The biggest attraction on this island (aside from the scenery, of course) is Dun Aengus, a spectacular ring fort dating back to the Iron Age, set high above majestic sea cliffs. The smallest island, Inisheer, is a more relaxed destination. Small, green, and almost completely covered in stone walls, the locals on this little island are incredibly hospitable. Inishmaan is the quietest of the islands and was the summer haven of playwright John Millington Synge, whose cottage is open to visitors during the high season.

The islands attract huge amounts of tourists each year thanks to their magical location, rich history, culture, and outstanding natural beauty. There is a variety of retaurants, traditional pubs, and lodging. You can also bring your tent and camp on the islands. Because of the raw climate they are best visited in the summer months. Bicycle rental is available on all three islands and while Inisheer and Inishmaan may be explored on foot, biking is definitely the most efficient way to see the sites on Inishmore.
