Alte Pinakothek

Alte Pinakothek (Old Art Gallery)

The Alte Pinakotek (old art gallery) is home to European paintings from the 14th to 18th centaury. It holds an extensive collection of over 800 works including masterpieces from artists such as Rembrandt, Franz Hals, and Velasquez. It also includes an important work by Raphael titled “Canigiani Holy Family,” which was the first work by the artist to be brought to Germany.

The museum is easy to navigate through, dividing art into sections by nationality of the painter. It holds a thorough collection of early Dutch and Flemish paintings. As well as an impressive amount of Spanish, Italian, French, and German art works.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 – 6:00 and is closed on Mondays. Admission is around $8, with the exception of Sunday when admission is around $1.50.

A historical art journey can then be completed with trips to the Neue Pinakotek (new art gallery), which holds paintings through the 19th centaury, and Pinakotek der Modern. (Modern art gallery) which holds works from the 20th centaury until today. Both are located a short distance away and hold equally impressive collections.
