Addis Ababa

With a population of more than two million people, Addis Ababa is not only the political capital but also the economic and social nerve-center of Ethiopia. Like any multi-cultural city there is tons to do for all the family.

Apart from the few grand hotels such as the Sheraton and the Hilton, accomodation can be very basic and hard to find. There are hundreds of local restaurants serving exotic traditional dishes.

Addis is a good starting point for travelling to the rest of the country with cheap flights to the north (Lalibela and Axsum?) and east to Harar.

Make sure you visit the Ethiopian National Museum to view Lucy, a 3.5 million year-old skeleton, the oldest hominid that has ever been found.
